The struggles of trying to conceive are many. It isn’t always easy to open up and share this type of personal information. But today we have a lovely real Mumma sharing her experience with us. Minna Boldt talks to us about IVF & PCOS and the added struggle of dealing with unwanted body weight. Minna is a real Mumma sharing her story to help encourage and empower other Mums out there to go for what they want. Some women yearn for the miracle of pregnancy for a long time. They may or may not get to experience it. After having a read of this beautiful personal account from Minna drop her a comment. And even as any questions you may have.
Let’s start with a quick intro and what you would like to share with us about IVF…
Hi everyone! My name is Minna I am a 31yr old mama of 2 and wife to hubby of 10yrs.
Gosh where do I start. For anyone going through this just know you are not alone ! Your dreams of having a family will happen, it might not happen as soon as you would like it to but it will!!! Hubby and I were told in our early 20’s that the only way we would have a family was with IVF. And it felt like our world had shattered !
Our son was 4yrs in the making naturally, he was from our second fresh cycle and then a year later we went back for #2 which was a frozen transfer. Our daughter caused us a lot of stress early in pregnancy from my HCG not quite doubling, progesterone dropping even after being on progesterone support 3 days a week, to being told at our first scan that it will be a “threatened miscarriage”! But our little girl was a fighter and held on and proved them all wrong ! IVF is bloody hard but we are so lucky to have this science available to us.
Have you had a weight loss struggle after having kids?
I’ve suffered with being overweight all my life. I have PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) and insulin resistant and that makes it much harder to lose weight.
What’s your experience with Weight Loss Surgery?
As above I have struggled with my weight and while going through IVF I had put more weight on with the medication. I have tried numerous things over the years. I’d lose some weight but then put double back on. I ended up with severe hypertension (high blood pressure) during my first pregnancy that never went away and I was battling that.
So last year I had enough and decided to take drastic measures into my own hands. So on 15/08/2017 I had weight loss surgery, the gastric sleeve to be exact. It is where they cut out roughly 80% of your stomach. Now I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it was what I needed to do and now at 8 months PO I have lost 34.9kgs, my BMI is in normal range, my PCOS has gone into “hiding”, no more high blood pressure and my asthma has also improved!!!
You’ve mentioned that you are a part of MEGA. Tell us a little more about this.
I found MEGA (Mums Exercise Groups Australia) last year but only really got involved with it this year. It is a great group and it’s all about cost effective exercise for Mums where kids are welcome and it’s a volunteer program run by other Mums.
Is there any advice you would like to give to other mums about a fit and healthy lifestyle as a mother.
My advice is get your kids involved! I use to always use my kids as excuses as to why I can’t workout but then I found a great outdoor personal trainer and MEGA Mums which is kid friendly so not only do I get a great workout in, my kids get involved, they cheer me on and even join in.
And, just a couple more funny kid related questions… Is there a food that you think is really gross but you make your kids eat it because it’s good for them?
I actually don’t feed my kids any foods I don’t like lol but I also have extremely picky eaters which makes it hard to get them to eat anything I make.
What would you change about your favourite restaurant to make it more kid-friendly?
I don’t really have a favourite restaurant but I would say things for the kids to do like little activity packs or a little play room/play equipment.
If you could share 3 pieces of advice with your younger self (before having kids!) what would they be?
1. To have better set myself up
2. Listened more
3. Do better in school !
Would you like to share any photos?
Now this photo is a progress of my weight-loss. The left pic was taken 2-3yrs ago at my heaviest and the right pic was taken on 21/04/18.And of course a photo of my crazy family and I !!!
